Towards Sustainability: Methods to Use in AEC Sector

Global Construction Perspectives and Oxford Economics report that global construction output will grow by 85% by 2030 with a $15.5 trillion economy at a global level. China, the US, and India account for 57% of this global growth. When there is a large scope for construction, there is a high possibility for environmental consequences.

With environmental impact in mind, the AEC industry should move towards sustainable practices and prevent further damage to our already damaged environment. The industry needs to strike a balance between sustainability and cost-effective designs, which can improve construction productivity on the whole. The industry already moving towards sustainability. Here are a few insights on the effective sustainable methods:

Using BIM for Efficient Buildings

A revolution in a sustainable building is Building Information Modeling (BIM). BIM though is not promoted as a sustainable technology; it delivers a wealth of boosts to efficient construction that can potentially reduce the construction project’s environmental footprint.

For example, a 4D BIM can schedule data precisely into a 3D BIM design file, enabling the contractors to develop step-by-step project plans and start building. Any design can be intertwined with the details regarding its lead-time, contraction, installation, curing and drying, and other processes.

Scheduling helps the AEC companies to eliminate hurried last-minute on-site coordination and re-work, which can reduce waste. The less time the construction team spends on the worksite, the less time high-emissions machinery, and power-hungry tools would be used. This could reduce energy consumption at the site.

Recycling Building Materials

The builders can use “circular construction”, i.e., using recycled and reoptimized construction materials. The AEC companies are turning to BIM to facilitate circular construction. Demolition of the old building before beginning new construction projects creates tons of landfills. Using recycled materials not only reduces construction costs but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions produced when manufacturing materials like construction-grade steel.

European countries are using “material banks”, a temporary storehouse of demolished materials that can be used when needed.

Using Sustainable Concrete

Concreate is a synthetic material widely used in any kind of construction which is environmentally damaging as well. The manufacture of concrete alone is responsible for nearly 5% of global CO2 emissions. Contractors and many construction companies are exploring sustainable ways to reduce emissions with alternatives like plastic and other recyclables. This initiative could reduce the carbon-di-oxide emission by almost 50%

Challenges in Sustainable Construction

Adopting sustainable construction methods will not happen overnight. There are challenges like cost. There will be pressure on the AEC service companies to reduce the cost where possible.

Affordability was a greater concern in adopting sustainable methods. The clients are demanding a green building. But the construction companies fear that they might be caught in the middle of demand and high costs.

Benefits of Sustainable Buildings

·       Commands a 7% increase in assets value over the traditional building.

·       The sustainable building reduces or eliminates negative impacts on nature, by consuming less water and energy/natural resources.

·       They bring several economic and financial benefits, which include savings in utility bills and higher property value.

·       Sustainable building improves the health and well-being of the people who live in/ work in these buildings.

Moving towards sustainability is the need of the hour. The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction industry is moving to sustainable and green constructions which will hugely impact the environment positively. And everyone is considerate about nature and demands green space for themselves, which creates demand for the AEC services to move to the good option.

Testing and Prototyping for Mechanical Engineering and Product Design

Prototyping is an important part of the process of realizing an idea. The procedure entails developing a prototype of your product concept to fine-tuning the elements. In mechanical engineering and product design, traditional prototyping can be a time-consuming and costly procedure.

Rapid prototyping, on the other hand, allows you to quickly and economically test and refine a mechanical design.

Rapid Prototyping

Rapid prototyping is the process of creating a three-dimensional version of your product idea using computer-aided design data, or CAD data. The design is swiftly manufactured in a scale model rather than utilizing traditional processes.

Several terms in mechanical engineering can be used to signify the same thing as rapid prototyping. Although these terms are not interchangeable, you may have heard this procedure referred to as 3D printing or additive manufacturing. Rapid prototyping is an additive process, which explains, why both terms have become interchangeable.

This is the most fundamental distinction between quick prototyping and traditional prototyping. Manufacturing is a parametric technique in traditional mechanical design. Rapid prototyping, on the other hand, entails building the model with additive fabrication processes to accelerate the process.

Mechanical Design and Product Design with Prototyping

Rapid prototyping has a variety of applications in mechanical and product design. Stages in the development of a product or piece of hardware could include:

·       Investigating a problem to solve.

·       Developing a proof-of-concept model.

·       Developing a works-like prototype.

·       Consumer feedback.

·       Developing a looks-like prototype.

·       Developing a mechanical engineering prototype.

·       Engineering and mechanical design.

·       Enhancing the production.

·       Authorization of mass production.

As you can see, there are numerous steps in which prototypes are required.

Mechanical testing and prototyping are an important part of the product development lifecycle since it allows organizations to extensively evaluate and analyze a product design. Prototype assessment assists you in determining product feasibility, determining whether it fulfills industry standards and identifying areas for improvement.

Testing and prototyping services from Vee Technologies assist you in determining the feasibility of a concept, developing prototypes, and eventually testing them. They provide a wide range of quick prototyping services to meet the specific needs of their customers. They may also help you with material characterization, correct drawings, and reengineering parts once the reverse engineering is finished.

Trends in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Industry 2022
Trends in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Industry 2022

The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) Industry is evolving with digital technologies, which is shaping the future of the industry. Over several years AEC industry is stabilized and developed with the help of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Internet of Things (IoT), which streamlines the operational processes and workflows. 2022 holds significant changes in the industry.

Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) and Digital Twins

With the help of advanced internet technologies, VDC and digital twins help to monitor, control, and optimize work remotely in real-time. VDC differs from BIM by managing the project. BIM is a shared resource of the project. Whereas VDC, in addition to having access to the shared document, can predict the performance of the project in comparison to the measured performance. It helps to assess the achieved objectives and reduces work duration and manpower.

Digital Twin is a fully-automated data transfer of the performance of the system in real-time. The digital twin transfers 3D model, digital rendering, and animation or simulation of the AEC plans. In short, it is an automated digital representation of the physical data, process, or system facilitated through IoT connectivity. It helps the stakeholders to visualize a project even before it is built. And real-time capture of the status of the building helps the team to monitor the performance and progress.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI is used in engineering applications and software for generative design, Robotic Process Automation (RPA), and material selection.

Generative design, an iterative process, is what an engineer uses to design the size and strength, or measure constraints. They would ask the AI to create some options based on them. Also, AI selects materials and code compliance of traffic, pedestrian walks, residential buildings, and other constructions.

RPA allows system to automate the administrative processes and tasks like verifying the orders, managing the bills of the ordered bills, etc.,

There is also a huge advantage of AI being integrated into VDC and digital twins for easy processes and management. There is research going on to integrate them.

Sustainable Buildings

The world is at the high point that everyone should consider sustainable living to protect the environment and subsiding the potential dangers. Some of the changes that are practiced are reducing carbon footprint and trying alternate to fuels.

AEC Industry is not an exception. The industry is searching for ways to build sustainable buildings and constructions, that have less effect on the environment, either short-term or long-term. Some of the solutions are green rooftops and green alleys, which use recycled materials for permeable concrete – a system to absorb storm water.

Another concrete material is called bio concrete, which has bacteria mixed into it. This is a self-healing component when the concrete cracks, aiding in the maintenance of the constructions.

Usage of the internet, advancement of technology, and enhancing sustainability are inevitable to any industry. The AEC industry has high scope to improve in these areas in 2022.
